Oh baby!

Just got home from the nuchal fold ultrasound and more blood tests. Geez baby you sure move a lot! You measure 4.73cm and according to your size, you're 11weeks 3 days. Less 2 days than our dating scan. Like Daddy said, 2 days difference isn't much. You just prefer to take your own sweet time developing, eh. No rush baby, we're happy as long you're healthy and well, growing. With 160bpm today you sure were'nt very co-operative when the sonographer wants you to move a little. Moving a little maybe is not your thing. You prefer flipping, wriggling, jerking and kicking. On our third try, you actually flip over from right to left! Took us almost an hour to get the ultrasound done. Well, in the end she's 22 images of you, my uterus and ovaries. That sounds like a lot to me. One of your images measured a 0.99cm thickness at the back of your neck. I hope it's all good. Oh and we also received a picture from your ultrasound.

Yesterday was another appointment with the doc. Apart from Daddy's oval-shaped blood cell, he showed absolutely negative on thalassemia. Mommy on the other hand showed negative on beta-thalassemia but they're running more tests on alpha-thalassemia. Even if I am a carrier, baby should turn out fine since Daddy has nothing. But they still need to run more tests to be absolutely certain. Then Mama called and informed about her conversation with Aunty Jo (my aunt, papa's side). Her daughter, Zahira (my cousin, whom just gave birth first child), also tested for alpha thalassemia and apparently it runs in Papa's side of the family! Zahira married an American and is living in NY now had undergone the same procedure and experiencing same problems. It's good to know about it. Beats from feeling like I've inherited it somewhere else. You see, Malaysia should run tests like these more often especially on pregnant ladies. Papa has 13 siblings and I've numerous cousins. Some gave birth already and none told me about this. None I doubt even knew about this. How lucky are we that our partners are negative. Geez. Makes me feel annoyed.

So the next appointment is in two weeks time and few days later with Dr Chandler at Burnside Hospital. We'll know more results then and be able to discuss more. For now, let's enjoy this.

Ahh yes. I forgot to add. During the ultrasound, I had to let out some of my bladder 3 times. Also, while you were still and she had just wanted you to move a little, she poked my belly few times to make you move. She also requested me to cough few times. All her efforts either made you move too much or not move at all. Oh baby!

hi along nie..
thalassemia is a combination of blood disorders. thalassemia alpha comes with little or no symptoms at all. if there is,

- just slight fatigue,
- pale and listless appearance (no wonder papa n i are so fair almost to the point of pucat!),
- sometimes mistakenly linked to iron deficiency due to the low haemoglobin count (but taking iron supplements doesn't necessarily help) no wonder i couldn't donate blood, they say haemoglobin count tak cukup. 5 kali try donate all failed.
- and mild anemia
- and maybe more but i forgot hehe

Those are with benign cases but there are more symptoms with severe cases like enlarged liver and spleen. If serious, baby may not survive the whole pregnancy or die shortly after birth.

I'm being positive with this. Though if I may be a carrier, Khairul is 'clean' so chances are the little one will be healthy, if not a mild case like me. If not, there are increasing number of treatments available like
- daily folic acid intake (i'm taking Elevit since the first time i fell pregnant, hopefully that'll help),
- blood transfusions
- spleen removal
Our results take 6-8 weeks.

I suppose our family will have to be careful not to "team-up" with a thalassemia carrier partner in future. Good info for Abg n Adik.

Selamat Hari Raya and Maaf Zahir Batin, Along Nie! And to your whole family! From both of us here down under, Khairul and Ija. =)

Ja,

Thanks for the very useful information. Selamat Hari Raya and Maaf Zahir Batin from me and family to you and hubby. Enjoy your first raya together as a couple.

Just keep posted on the actual test result on the thalasemmia thingy later. I think nothing to be worrying about.

Take care and enjoy your pregnancy.

Miza...in Malaysia -there is already available thalassemia tests, I guess depends on which doctor and which hospital you went to. SJMC has all these and the OB would do the test on you (but not on your partner though, I guess that's the next step). There's also additional test on down syndrome.
Anyway - congratulations on your pregnancy!
